Default ESP won't completely turn off?

Playing around in an icy parking lot this morning, I confirmed my suspicion the the ESP on my '01 ar doesn't completely disengage when you have it "turned off"; it just seems to raise the threshhold wheelspin at which the controls kick in.

Does anybody know if you can make the on/off switch completely shut it down? Is this a VAG-COM mod?

TIA.

Default Funny you should bring this up...

I have come across the same thing recently just finishing a trip from Portland to Montana and back. I did some playing around with the ESP off in Montana...e-brake turns around corners, powering through others, etc. and I noticed that quite frequently I could feel my brakes up front engaging the rotor thus slowing wheel spin.(almost like hte ABS was kicking in) Kinda ticked me off and I thought that something was wrong...so it sounds like the ESP is never competely turned off? Anyone? Or do I have a problem with my 02'?

Default ESP use

Under what conditions should I turn off ESP? Is it bad for the brakes to use ESP when it is really active over long periods? Thanks, Greg

Default hmmmm...I could start from a stop....

push the button to turn off ESP, get on the gas and start a turn and would find and hear a metalic like grinding noise and vibration in the brake pedal like the ABS was activating...interesting.

Default Re: The diff lock is part of the program..

Does the diff lock engagement sound similar to ABS (a stuttering/vibrating noise)? If so, that would explain it. Of course you don't want the diff lock turning off when the wheels are spinning - that's why one buys Quattro!
Presumably you only hear the rear (and front?) diff locks; the center Torsen diff should be silent, I think.

Orthorex - read your manual, it tells you to turn off ESP in certain conditions like deep snow or sand.
