Default Evidence (albeit, anecdotal) for the Octane Debate

So I tried 89 octane a few times and noticed no difference in performance, so my wife and I put-in 89 every few tanks.

Our AR now has 47,600 miles on it and finally, last night, I got a check-engine light. It went out almost immediately, then the car started hesitating, light came on and stayed on. It was running like crap... idle and during acceleration. I took it in to the dealer.

"There were carbon deposits on the injector in one cylinder, we pulled and cleaned it. You should stop running with low-octane gas." I denied that I did in-fear of getting charged for the repair. He knew I was lying, and smirked and said, "don't worry, its covered."

So, at least with our car, octane DOES make a difference.

In CA, we only get 91 octane (yes, it pisses me off), so it looks like I only have one choice for gas. Ugh.

Default In other words - following the user manual's recommendation isn't a waste of time ;-)

Because I have to drive short distance I'll feed her every other month with half a tank of 100 Oct from a Sunoco station. The "cleaning" effect is awesome and so far there were no Carbon build issues.

Default another point you may not have looked for...

I'v done extensive sample tanks in my allroad over its youn 143,000 mile life. I have found that for a savings of 10%...93 oct vrs 89 or 87 octane, my MPG went down the same 10%. So in the end there was no savings.

Default '91 GLI at 100k miles the head gasket was seeping water externally. When I went to pick

it up ater the gasket was replaced the mechanic says "you use premium gas don't you" me "yes, why" he continues "that is one of the cleanest internals I have seen with that milage, it looks new"

Bought it new and today it has a tick under 260K.

Many people have said I am throwing my money away. I just agree and keep pulling to the 92 octane pump.
