There's a splotchy, filmy appearance on lots of the exterior aluminum trim on the allroad we're considering, most likely the result of getting improper cleaners/waxes on the aluminum. This rubs right off when using the right cleaner, correct?

It should, but having said that there are some things that can permanently stain/discolor aluminum......so make sure whatever it is comes off first before buying. BTW......I find that a simple mixture of 1 ounce white vinegar to 16 oz of water works great to clean it.....takes hard water spots off and leaves it very nice looking.
You can even wax it if you want to give it some protection.

I had lots of problems with the shiny trim. Even to the extent Audi UK has replaced it 4 times in one year. The main problem was a milky film appearing over the top. Even the dealer had problems trying to get it cleaned. Audi UK, with their total lack of knowledge, told me I should change how I washed the car. Talk about lack of product knowledge. They finally admitted that there was a problem and have replaced it under warranty. They have also coated it with a wax from Porsche. Only problem is that it still discolouring. Crap!!!!
