Finally Blown my Turbo.

Typical day, I was 195 miles from home in the middle of London going down lower Thames Street on to the Embankment when bang. Huge clouds of smoke and a strange whirring under acceleration.
Anyway got lifted home and dropped car off at local Audi garage. There first impressions are blown turbo, now I know this is bad but the garage say they need to check the exhaust system. If the oil has got in from blower then this too needs replacing.
Can somebody of a technical nature explain about the exhaust please.
By the way the car has 127600 miles (205352 Km) and has been driven hard everyday of its life so I was expecting something to happen soon. But a blown Turbo in conjunction with new exhaust and catalyst sounds very expensive.

the TDI Exhaust. TDI is not your basic diesel system... its very wrapped up with electronics, high pressure fuel and emissions.
If the turbos blew... then the oil can run right into the exhast fouling the sensors. Its a possibility.. but not all the time.

the purpose of a catalyst is to burn super hot to destroy any unwanted gases and emissions from the car. If there is oil in the exhaust anywhere before the catalyst then it could ignite and burn your car up. Very dangerous situation.

I am also a former URS6 Avant owner. My buddy owns my former cars twin. About 6 weeks ago the turbo TOTALLY let go at 28 psi, tearing through the compressor and turbine housing (wow), dumped ~1/2 a quart of oil straight into the down pipe. Only ill effects was it smoked unbelievably for a week or so.
Runs fine now, including the O2 sensor. I'd fix the turbo, leave the exhaust be unless a problem later says there was damage, diagnose then.
