Default Finally solved my RNS-E "can't read disc" issues...

Haven't posted in a while, but here goes the short story
Get unit from Haggie in Holland via navplus.us (very risky txn)
Struggle installing (wrongly setup harness)
Had to pull dash,DIS and unit many x
Then DVD (a copy doesnt work)
Rip new DVDs on many different types of media
Finally works on Fuji
Shorlty there after would get occasional cant read errors
Get staples cd cleaner (CD with brushes), slight improvement for a month or so
Got progressively worse and worse (80-100% of time cant read)
Spray inside of slot w/ CO2 (can from keyboard cleaner) even worse
Order new DVD from navteq (~$240)
Updates firmware, then cant read (WTF!)
Try old copy dvd (again works sporadically)
Dont want to take unit out and disassemble (may never even bea able to get to lense anyway) or ever get it back together
Was thinking of how to clean lens (fancy qtip, something else?)
Tried the ol' faithful plastic putty knife, wrapped in a lint free cloth (ski goggle pouch)
Stuck it in slot a few times (triggers unit to try and suck in cd) and feels fragile inside
Do it a few times (only had the 2" wide putty knife)
Put new OEM cd in, still doenst work
Leave CD in, next time started car worked!
I think you need to start car w/ dvd in, cuz when putting in and out after starting, get similar errors (not going to tempt fate and test, could it be a software errors? this is a converted'flashed euro unit)
Left in and haven't had 1 fail yet, even in hot envs w/ the ac on (seemed to trigger cant read errors in past -- due to fogging?)
Hope this helps others

Default Wow. I bought mine from Haagie and it worked perfect the first time and every time.

I guess he isn't the one actually refurbing them so any particular unit is a roll of the dice.

Default First of all I'm listed on Ted's list for installation tech support so I could have helped you

and your head ache factor might have been less. But I'm glad you got it worked out. On another topic Were gonna do a bay area GTG so keep your eyes peeled.

Default Off Topic, GTG in bay area, sounds like a plan.

Just an FYI, we are heading out to Boneville for Record Week on Sept 10th thru 15th. Were going to shoot for the wheel driven record.

Mark.

Default A lot of times it isn't the laser the causes the problems in cd/dvd drives, it is the part that grip

s the center ring and drives the disc. Because the speed must vary to read the disc and slippage really screws things up. If you could devise a way to get that part totally clean i'm guessing you'd be alright.

Hi.
I also don't know what else to do more to solve my problem.
My RNS-E reads SD cards, CDs, just not DVD copies. Already made several experiments. Will try to do like you did and to leave the DVD copy inside to see what happens. But so far just that annoying "Please insert Navigation Disc".
Grrrrrrrrrrr. I do want to kill that brick.
