Default Flat-spotting Conti's on S6, need opinions. X-Post

I've been running 255/40/18 Conti Extreme Contacts on my S6 for about 500mi. If the car sits for any length of time, even over night, I get a pretty significant wobble for the first 10-15 miles. It seems to be getting worse as the nights get colder. Now, I am used to this with the S0 2's on my P-car, but they are summer performance tires and this car sits for days at a time without use. But the conti's are "all season," and it hasn't even begun to get cold here in Wisconsin.

I returned to my tire dealer, a local outfit, and he drove the car (it was warm, so it was perfect, of course). He offered to replace the tires, no questions asked. He suggested trying the Toyo Proxes T1R.

My dilemma is that I like the Conti's quite a bit, once they are good and warm. Nice compromise between handling and comfort. I am afraid that I'll have similar problems with the Toyo's, or any other tire for that matter, and I will be left with a tire I may not like once they are warm. Incidentally, I will be using the 17in Avus with Nokian WR's for winter.

Any opinions?

Default I had a previous set of conti's that did this too. this set seems OK though.

I'd say just put up with it for the 10 minutes. :-)

Default Have you read the Tire Rack's article on flatspotting?

Default Function of tread belting construction. Pirellis are notorious for this too...

Old Benz with P600's was awful every morning. And like you, my P Cars did this with the R-compound tires.
If I recall, it's a function of Nylon in the belting package under the tread retaining a memory until warmed back up. Some tires don't do it as much because the manufacturer mixes in other materials like Rayon and Steel.
Sister has the Toyos on her Benz, and they've gotten a bit noisy after 6000 miles of driving, though I'm not sure she ever rotated yet.
