Default Front Bumper/Headlight Replacement

Ok, call me n00b, but I just can't get the headlights replaced. I've read the TB Replacement article (several times), I don't have Bentley's and the car is sitting in the rain bumper halfway out, owner frustrated and wife eyeballing like no end.

After going through all the articles in the forum about the front bumper and the headlights, I'm not any wiser. So, PLEASE enlight me in these two issues:

1) Could someone elaborate TB article's "Pry the bumper (with strong hands) away from the fender at the wheel well to pop it out of the guide that it is mounted to". Where are the guides? Which direction to pry (out or forwards)? Pictures would be a nice surprise... I also removed the foglights - if I pull hard enough from the partitioning next to the foglight, will the bumper come out (whithout any damage, naturally)?

2) Is removing the front bumper absolutery necessary when replacing the headlights. If not, what's the procedure?

And the wife is asking, wouldn't it be easier to take the car into the shop... Please, guys prove her worng...

Default That is my text that is confusing you.

Really you just have to yank it straight out (not forward) until it pops off the guide. I tried over and over again thinking I was pulling too hard and something was wrong. Turns out I wasn't pulling hard enough.

Here is the only pic I could come up with:

As for the headlights I could not get mine out of the car though the A6 guys say you can. I challenged someone to prove me wrong but have had no takers.

messin' with teh lights

Default The thing the bumper sticks to is the black thing at the bottom of the fender, or are you talking

about the silver L type brackets?

Default They must come out, plenty of A6 guys (I'm assuming it's the same install, just different

housings) have pulled theirs out and replaced them with allroad lamps.

Default Ugly black thing shaped like a t-bone steak with the grid pattern.

It is called a bumper guide in ETKA I believe.

Default Remember the allroad has shortened overhangs. There could be a difference.

I think you may be right, but it's not like I just looked at it and said it won't come out. I have everything loose, unplugged, unattached in any way and it simply would not fit through the opening available. Perhaps there is some other component that can be removed to make room. I'd have to look at it again.

Yeah, so it's the same thing that you have to pull out on back bumper to unhook.

Default Right side headlight came out A6 way...

RMcQ, don't get me wrong, I really appreciate your TB article, it has been a great help already!

Anyhow, with the bumper a bit loose (but still attached to the guides) I was able to push the outer edge of the lamp (with plenty of painter's tape to protect the lamp and the trimmings) inside the engine compartment - far enough to remove the guide pin by pushing the bracket with flat head screwdriver. It came out quite easily, actually. Putting it back was a bit trickier...

As for the left (driver's side) headlight, it seems that there isn't enough space to push the lamp far enough in order to do the same trick.

For releasing the bumper from the guide, I wonder if it would be possible to use a jaw clamp (or something like that) as a spreader and push the bumper out from the inside?
