Default no, you are better off with 93, in any doubt refer to the car manual

but try not to go below the recommended value...

Default Yes, at a minimum.

If you can't afford premium gas, just wait until you get to your first timing belt change....an Audi is probably not the best choice for someone that's going to agonize over buying premium fuel. :-)

Cheers,

Default I ran a test....

Kind of a comparion and I found that the MPG was better with higher octane than with lower. But it was in direct relation to the $$/mile. IE: 93 Octane was 8% more cost and I got 8% better MPG. So, I give my car the higher octane, because I feel the difference and the out of pocket is the same.

Default Yes, no, maybe

In Colorado, I was able to run on 87 (at 5300 ft) with no noticible reduction in timing advance. Gas milage did not suffer either. I imagine when intake temps get higher, I might get some detonation on 87. You can always try it and see if you feel any difference. But my opinion is, I wouldn't tow a boat up any hills with less than 91/93. If you put-put around town you could be okay.

Default Re: If you do the numbers

15,000 miles per year 17 mpg average and $.16 more per gallon for premium, it will cost about $140 more per year. Is it worth the risk?

Default turbo engines usualy have lower compression ratios- so at light throttle...

you can burn crap and be OK. But add some boost and you really need higher octane. So if you want to drive like the car can be driven then I would use 92/93 or whatever is in your area.
