Default Got a email from VW about putting Nitrogen in my tires?

Here is the email my local VW dealer sent me today. I have never heard of this? Anyone have any input on this?

Dear Joseph,

An Important Money Saving Message From Lou Bachrodt Automall

Lou Bachrodt Automall Has Nitrogen

Lou Bachrodt Automall is excited to announce the capability to fill the tires on your vehicle with nitrogen. Increasingly, nitrogen in tires is becoming a popular replacement for standard air. With nitrogen tire inflation, improvements can be noted in a vehicle's handling, fuel efficiency and tire life through better tire pressure retention, improved fuel economy and cooler running tire temperatures. We can perform the simple task of replacing the air in your tires with nitrogen for an introductory price of only $7.00 per tire, with free fill-ups for the life of the tire.*

Nitrogen could save you over $100 per year in fuel and tire wear

Properly inflated tires will improve your vehicle's MPG and safety

Used by NASCAR, commercial airlines and the U.S. Government

FILL YOUR EXISTING TIRES WITH NITROGEN for only $7.00 per tire* at either Lou Bachrodt location

Find out how much money you will save by filling your tires with nitrogen. Use the savings calculator at www.getnitrogen.org.

Don't delay! This special introductory offer expires February 28, 2007. (Regular cost for this service is $34.95)

For additional information, or to schedule an appointment, please call us at 815-332-3000.

I look forward to seeing you soon.

Sincerely,
David Reed

Default air is 78% nitrogen anyway.

if you keep your tires properly inflated, this shouldn't be needed.

Costco has been using nitrogen in tires they sell for quite a while now.

PSI is PSI. It doesn't matter if it's air or nitrogen, so I can't imagine any fuel/wear savings or handling gains when using nitrogen vs. air (assuming, of course, the same tire pressures as with air).

That said, I *have* heard of using nitrogen in tires before, but for a different reason -- it keeps the tire's inside surfaces from oxidizing. How big a problem the oxidation is though, I don't really know.

Default ...for $7/tire?? My local shop does it for $2.75, and that is for my size...

less for smaller tires...I think it works well, generally my tires loose less pressure, and don't get as hot (from my rough SOTP testing)..

Default It's the 21% of o2 that makes the pressure fluctuate with temp changes,

but unless it's a track only car, I don't see the point. Air is free. I'll stick with it.

Default Joe, There is other local places that does it as well cheaper than

that. One of my customers had it done for around $3.00/tire. They claim they do not fluctuate with weather, get better traction and can possibly add some minimal mpg. Let me know if you want the name of the place.

Default Revenue raiser!! This is not a letter from VW corporate..

This is a advertisment/mailer from a dealer. The goal is to raise revenue.

The line: "Properly inflated tires will improve your vehicle's MPG and safety."

Has nothing to do with nitrogen, but the need for correct inflation..period.

Now you can think if increasing the mix from 78% to 100% is of any value for a regular driving individual.
