grrrr....dealer says fan is cracked
Took it in for the fuel nipple thing recall and they want $430 to replace the fan. Is there a write up on how to DIY? I checked the archives and allroad FAQ but didn't see anything.

Part number 4z7 121 301.
I think a few people have been successful in changing the fan without loosening the lock carrier, but it's a very tight work space. The standard method is to loosen the lock carrier, pull the radiator out a inch or two, then use a wrench and the "chopsticks" tool to remove the fan. (Note: left-hand threads.) I've made do without the chopsticks by jamming a long-handled allen wrench into the holes in the hub. (Not the holes you see here -- holes on the hub that the fan screws onto.)
See RMcQ's timing belt writeup for loosening the lock carrier. You have to do most of the steps through B19, which takes under an hour with practice. Seems like a lot of work just to replace the fan, but this is maintenance you really don't want to put off. Several posters have had the fan disintegrate and do extensive damage to the radiator, hoses, and other parts.

awesome. thank you
I will check with my indy shop and see what he quotes then base my decision to pay or DIY off that. I definitely do not want to delay this (don't drive it during the week anyway) but I wasn't about to fork over that much cash to the dealer for something like this.
FYI - the service rep told me it was a $100+ part and 2.7 hrs of labor. Hours quote sounds right for me, but probably not for a trained audi mechanic. The part seems a little high also based on your post.
