Default Had a A4 2.0T s-line quattro loaner this weekend, interesting fuel economy observation

a little tight for a a family of four but we made due. This one had a tiptronic with paddle shifters which made it more tolerbale to drive, but the car is really underpowered -- constanly shifting gears in sport mode. I couldn't drive it in "D".

Now for the interesting thing -- fuel ecomomy. I drove this basically the same way I drive my allroad, a bit spirited, but by no means "driven like it was stolen". We did mostly highway miles and the trip computer showed an average of about 20 mpg (I reset it when I picked it up).

For those lookig to punt the allroad for better fuel ecomony, based om my small experiement, it's not going to make a difference. I would highly recommend doing add'l research before making the switch.

Default To add to your observations they've estimated the B8 A4 will get an EPA

estimated 25mpg. My B5 A4 averages 24 mpg so I don't see much hype in how FSI gives better fuel economy and I also drive my care spirited so I bet if I did 65 mph I would better the B8.

Default I disagree considering how much more HP and torque the 2.0T is giving you over the 1.8T

when comparing it to the 2.7t or the 4.2 the 2.0T does seam a bit underpowered, but its night and day better than the 1.8t. Once properly tuned as with a flash, or with the S3 version of the engine, and your talking performance output similar to the 3.2 and closing in on the 2.7t (not bad for a 4cyl.) and still getting close to 26mpg (28-30 hwy).

I got 25 in the last A4 2.0T I had for a loaner, vs. about 17 I would have gotten in the allroad.

Default I was getting no where near 26 mpg with the 2.0T

and to modify the engine to that degree, the payoff has to be multiple years (excluding fun factor)

Only point I was making with this post, is if you are thinking of dowsizing becuase of fuel prices, you may want to rethink doing so.

And acutally, I don't think the 2.0T is light years ahead in performance. I think they got modest gains in the motor and matched it to a 6 speed automatic with taller gearing to get the add'l torque.

My mother-in-law's 1.8T cab front wheel drive felt just as flat as the 2.0T quattro car.

Default Not really look at the 2.0T in the S3, thats done at the factory.

its a young engine and hasn't been tuned to its full potential, look at the original numbers for the 1.8T or the 3.2 when they first came out compared to the end of their life cycle (1.8t was rated at only 150hp when it first came out). Not to mention I know of numerous flashed 1.8Ts with well over 200k on them and still going strong. A simple flash (which I wouldn't consider moding to any great degree) is going to get you to 250-260HP and close to 280 tq, if your modifying to any great degree your talking way over 300 for both.

I've owned both a 1.8t and a 2.0t (both stock and flashed) and can say with great confidence that the 2.0t is light years ahead with regards to performance (both stock and flashed). Now if it will have the longevity is yet to be seen.

As for the MPG, must have been something wrong if you were getting that poor MPG, if you were going by the trip computer it can often be inaccurate.

Default Ahh -- my bad here -- this car had only 6K miles on it

Engine wasn't broken in yet. I remember my Jetta getting horrendous mileage until about 12K miles. It just hit my last night as I was thinking about it.
