Does anyone else have this problem? I have about 45K miles on the car and until the car warms up it sometimes will not even shift out of 1st gear. It seems none of my other cars had this problem with so few miles on it. Also what is that loud noise coming from the front of the engine on first start ups after the car has cooled down?

I thought it was a feature not a bug :-) I assumed the tranny intentionally stays in first gear to keep revs up to get the oil circulating. This lasts about 30 seconds on mine and the noise goes away and it shifts normally after that.

Someone please tell me this is normal. Mine has just over 20000Kms on it now.

The trans stays in 1st when cold to get the cats to warm up faster.... reduces emissions. I just go to tip and manually upshift. Allroad and both previous A6's did this.

The noise up front is also normal. Not entirely sure, but I believe it also has to do with the warm up cycle and emissions again. In my car, if I've parked in the driveway alongside the house and not in the garage, when i start the car on a cold morning (single digits) this noise actually rattles my storm windows on the house. Drives my wife nuts if she's still asleep when I leave for the office.
