628 is the servotronic steering module under the dash. In older cars it was either the 604 or 605. I can't remember which. If you feel like your cars steering is over boosted and lacks feel, especially when doing canyon runs, you can pull this and it cuts powersteering and improves feel significantly, but not totally.
The downside is that the steering is quite heavy at parking lot speeds and takes a while (took me a week) to get used to. But when you do get used to it you won't want to go back, and you'll wonder "Why did audi program thier powersteering the way they did?" Now, to me, everything else feels overboosted.
I would say about 10-15% (unscientific) of the people who did this mod, put it back. But it's free and easy to do - it's just like pulling a plug out of a wall.
If you search the archives for "628 delete" you'll come up with many comments and instructions. Some people have wired a switch into the circuit so they can turn the module on or off. Some have also wired it into the Tip function of thier auto's so when in tip mode the module is turned off. I didn't want to get that involved, so I just pulled it.
IMHO, this was a great mod. It was free. It took 10 minutes. And it vastly improved the car's feel in corners.
Re: potholes. that 'back end shift' you're feeling is something these cars do. You get used to it. It is caused by poor wheel control due to not enough rebound control in the shocks and soft bushings. H-sports will reduce this a great deal as they will dampen single wheel road impulses. the 402 mod exacerbates this when you're driving in the lowest setting. The valving seems to deteriorate as you lower the car out of it's operating specs. THis is why I un-402'd my car. You'll find a few guys on this board like me who think the 402 is a bad mod, or at least not worth it. (but not many.)

I was disappointed when I started driving my AR after I first purchased it. Seemed to handle more like a minivan than sport sedan. H-Sports made a huge dif. That's all I've done so far. I wish there was an additional mod for handling. Not ready for the coilover conversion since I'm still under warranty.
Brake mods will likely be my 2nd move.

still getting in some good rides, but nothing like your alaska adventure.
overall, can't complain.
