Dunlop M2 WinterSports, stock size...
...i.e., 225/55-17. M3s, if you can find them in that size (I'm hoping TireRack has our size by next winter). There are no handling compromises with these tires relative to the OEM Pirellis that I could feel, and they (the M2s) are real winter tires (the snowflake symbol and all).

I am running Michelin Artic Alpins 215/65/16. They are fairly quiet and handle nice. Good on wet and slushy roads. I like how they handle icy conditions. Can't say much about deeper snow since we haven't had much. Didn't spend much time evaluating choices since I purchased these used.

I've been running on the Pirelli SnowSports this winter and am VERY pleased with them. We've had piles of snow here in Ontario this year, and they have been excellent in the snow and slush. As an added bonus I've found them to be much quieter (if you can believe that!) than the stock all seasons.

Arctic Alpins...
...(which I put on my wife's Forester) are Q-rated, and there's a handling sacrifice. But they're quite good in packed/icy conditions (they're heavily siped -- lots and lots of little biting edges). Pilot Alpins, H-rated but with less siping, have been said to handle well and fall into the same class with the M2s and the Pirelli SnowSports.

...so good, you may decide to run them year round - seriously. They are a proven winter tire (severe service emblem) that was designed to do well under all weather conditions. I ran a group buy on these in the Fall and 3 guys put them on the allroads and are considering running them year round.

Great rain, snow and ice tire, good dry traction and quiet. Good wear, so far. Good handling for a winter tire.
