i've polled a few dealers, and there are east coast dealers who claim to have cars "in port", expected to arrive any time now. the west coast dealers all seem to be expect them to take a month or more. is this just sampling error, or does it take a month longer for these cars to get to the west coast?

As with most things it really gets down to luck.
If your car is built and arrives as a ship is about to leave for the US great. Otherwise it has to wait until they are sending stuff over. Once it gets here the same applies. SOme seem to go by train or truck.
I can't rmember exactly but it was close to 4 weeks between my car hitting the US and getting to Seattle. It also seem really looooong because it is so close yet you don't have it !

Depending on car/time it was ordered.
My first A4 back in 97 took 5 months, second A4 back in 99 took 3 months. Got my ar on dealer trade, so only took 2 days!

...all Audi's hit Port in San Diego then trucked throughout the state to dealers - so I was told by my dealer. In my case about 10 days from Port to Monterey, CA...

Supposedly, according to a couple dealers here, the cars destined for the West Coast go to Houston or San Diego and are, obviously, trucked the rest of the way.
There is a variable amount of time they spend at the port (1 day-~2 weeks) and then the travel time. It may not really be faster for a West Coast car delivery if brought to the San Diego port vs Houston since it is probably faster to truck the difference in mileage than to go through the Panama Canal and back up to San Diego.

Mine came through Wilmington, DE although it was destined for Bend, OR. Go figure. It took about a month to be transported (by rail) across the country - although that was during the holiday season last December/January.
