Default I found that even with 7-8 turns when tracking the car they'll come lose and need frequent

attention. Before and after every run the torque wrench should be used. Last time at VIR one guy lost a wheel because he forgot to tighten up the bolts.
And to be honest, I only know a handful of people who re-torque their wheels once a month or after long rides ;-)

Default True but from experience the conventions are...

Metric 1.5 DIA. In some low stress applications we will go to 1.0 DIA but it will have to analysed for pull out load.

Imperial we require a minmimum 5 thread engagement.

These rules are based on the idea that often the first thread on a fastener or its mating part is not fully formed due to manufacturing methods and tolerances. The same can apply to the mating part which means that with the 5 thread min length you guarantee three full threads.

I would NOT rely on only three threads to hold my wheels on although I do understand that your basic concept is correct.

Default Has anyone actually counted the threads available in the hub?

Its just thought but if we actually know the female thread depth then it could go on the allroad FAQ. It would then make choosing wheel studs easy for those that add spacers.

Just a thought and if UPS choose to deliver my airspring today I mioght even do this myself at the weekend.

Cheers

Well, I have the opposite problem. I have 45mm bolts and they are too long! By about 3 mm. Shop is going to cut off the excess...
