Default I managed 24 mpg with my AR 4.2

180 miles total, round trip Milford PA to NYC. Highway and state and local roads.
Highway speed: 65-80mph
Road: 45 thru 60mph

Driving style: smooth, smooth acceleration and try to avoid stopping if possible. Stay on the 5 gear as much as possible too. Usually when I push harder(hwy 80 and up up up) and road (above 65) I manage 21mpg combined

Default Just wish it had a sixth gear to push RPMs closer to 2,000 while cruising at 70+ mph

The engine has more than enough torque, as well as 2.7T.

I have a new Jetta 2.5, as a loaner for my S4 right now, with a 6 speed tip. VW/Audi has finally seen the value of pushing rpm down for fuel economy. The Jetta will do 2,300 rpm at 75 mph on the highway for mpg approaching 40 mpg. About time!

Default That is very good. I noticed that we have a pretty sharp increase in fuel consumption above 75 mph.

Actually I do not see much difference in mpg between 2.7 tip and 4.2. Our 4.2 final ratio is taller than 2.7 tip. (at 3000rpm 4.2 does 80mph while 2.7 goes 70mph). I wholeheartedly agree that we could use more overdrive with 8 cyl engine (like S6 has).

Default The stop and go / city driving is the killer....

What you need to do to improve city driving is anticipate as much as you can. Also you have to use the inertia of the car. Since it is heavy, you should avoid slowing down as much possible in a descent so when it goes up again you don't have to put on the gas right away.... a little bit like when you bike ....
