The state overturned the complaint (I guess by an officer) and we get to keep the plate.

Link sent to me by another AW member. Thanks Alan (GoCougarsWSU).<ul><li><a href="http://www.crosscut.com/weird/16202/Vanity+profanity%21+The+600+license+plates+banned+ by+the+state">The 12th paragraph down</a></li></ul>

Default Well those are some tax dollars well spent... Glad your son won.

They have an entire <i>staff</i> dedicated to this nonsense!

Sincerely,

I am glad he won. Too bad any time and money had to be spent to clear this up.

Default Interesting. I worked on one of those cases in law school. Some guy had the plates "WEEN ME" on a

300D. It was a reference to an indy rock band Ween, but the Commonwealth of Virginia complained that it had sexual connotations.

Default so why does the gov't even waste their time with this.

is this not restricting FREE SPEECH whether or not they are offensive, lewd, etc.? Take away their license plate and they could just as easily make a bumper sticker that says the exact same thing as before. They arent protecting anybody by doing this, but rather wasting time, money, and energy by worrying about it. Not to mention putting restraints upon free speech.

&lt;/rant&gt;

Default It's silly, I admit. But, there is a difference using a government resource ...

... issued with something offensive, vs an end-user provided bumper sticker.

Most the the plate names mentioned in the article aren't that bad, imho.

Default i understand that it could be taken that the gov't coulbe be seen as...

endorsing such things as racial slurs, etc. if they allowed anything on license plates. but from the other side, it could be taken that the government is restraining free speech by picking and choosing which ones are "ok."

just how im interpreting this.

Default Hm... by that logic, it would be ok for PBS to be F' this, etc on daytime tv.

I know what you're saying, but free speech is not being blocked. No one* is stopping the car owner from placing the same sequence of characters on a bumper sticker.

* ok, maybe in some counties down south
