See article on page 26 for full story re: VW/Audi
Excerpt:
"...Then in late 2005 Audi will go large with its own version of the Porsche Cayenne/VW Touareg 4X4. This even bigger than the Porsche and VW, thanks to a wheelbase stretch to offer a third row of seats. In looks, it's said to be a crossbreed between the Avantissmo and Magellan design exercise...."
"...Audi once looked at a place in the Porsche/VW project, but former boss Paefgen (now at Bentley) preffered to make the A6 allroad. That hasn't gone down well in America, so group R&D chief Martin Winterkorn is backing away from the allroad idea."
This would be consistant with other articles (by CAR) re: the allroad. Where it has been said when the allroad replacement date arrives (modle year 2005) it may simply be dropped in favor of an "official" SUV...
The article also speaks of the new Golf/A3 platform that the new "Steppenwolf" will be based on (with a picture). Originally a 3-door concept, it has been changed to a 5-door configuration (i.e. avant style) wich Audi market research says will fair better in America while the Golf/A3 remain a 3-door...

I fear the days of Audi design as we know and love it may be over with the succession of Dr. Paefgen by Martin Winterkorn. Look no further than the Pikes Peak for what future abominations may be coming. Paefgen would have never given the PP a green light as a concept, a show car and certainly not as a production vehicle. The next TT will probably look like a Mitsubishi Eclipse.
Winterkorn may succeed in pulling Audi in towards the mainstream and thereby increase sales. But I for one have no interest in an Audi Escalade or any other wannabe.

Three plus years after Audi made the perfect crossover vehicle other manufacturers are finally releasing their versions. Meanwhile Audi has noticed that SUVs (tarted up trucks) are selling rather well. So Audi has (belatedly) decided to jump on the SUV bandwagon.
My guess is that by the time an Audi SUV is released the market will have moved on to something else. What something else? From the evidence at recent car shows and in the press, that something will likely be a handsome, fast, comfortable, capable vehicle, a station wagon in all but name ... rather like the allroad.
Oops. Oh well, so much for "never follow."
