Well, after much messing around and looking at sensible diesel Passat and Golfs I decided life is too short and went for the first car I looked at, a 2.7T 6sp 2002 (but 2001 model) Allroad.
Picked it up yesterday and drove it 130 miles or so home and first thought is..... fantastic.
It goes like a rocket (the 4.2 must be simply ballistic), corners so much faster and more confidently than the XC70 I used to have and the electric lumbar adjustment is superb (I have a bad back from a bad car accident some years ago).
Mine is pretty low spec (especially compared to the stuff you guys have in the US) but still I think it is great.
Only niggles so far are
1) This is the only thing that worries or bothers me. When driving home last night with the engine warm after travelling at speed (80-ish) for some time I noticed a misfire. I know the dealer had the car for 6 months so maybe it was old fuel. I was near empty anyway so filled up and put 98RON in and it was lots better. The misfire was when on light throttle loading. Neither over-run or full throttle acceleration cause any problems. I will keep an eye on it and give you guys a shout if it continues.
2) The cup holder is crap, you guys are right there
3) As I mentioned in a previous thread "When rising the height with the 1st LED lit and 2nd LED flashing I had to wait til the 2nd LED went solid before I could then go up again to level three and same again up to 4." This is defintely what happens. I press up (to go from L2 to L3) and the up button now does nothing until the LED goes steady to say it has reached L3 whereupon I can again press up to go L3 to L4. No worries in the grand scheme of things but an strange one.
All in all a very happy bunny.

See some (crappy) pics and read some ramblings here - more pics coming soon I hope

Congrats and welcome to the family! I'm guessing the cloth seats must have been standard equip in Euro specs.
