Default looking to get canoe rack - opinions.

with the recent arrival of the h-sports [still not installed], i'm on to my next project. preparing the allroad to take me fishing. i have a 16' canoe that i have been hauling in a late 70's Ford F-150 [a.k.a. uncle jesse]. so, my plans include rubber mats front back and cargo. then some sort of canoe rack. what are the popular opinions on the best racks? i like the look of the thule, but the yakima seems to be a little cheaper. opinions???

thanks. .j

Default yakima racks on my ar with bike, ski and kayak attachments

The kayak stuff may work for the canoe, depending on the (not sure of the right term here) slope/angle of the sides. check the Yakima website.

Default 6 in one, half dozen the other.

You'll find that the folks here enjoy BOTH Thule and Yak products, so it's really up to you. I went with Thule, only because I liked the shape of their boxes better.

You can find discounted stuff here.

Default Re: I use Thule for my canoes...

I use the Yakima system with gunwale brackets to haul my 17'6" Wenonah canoe, works like a charm. I'm a big fan of gunwale brackets b/c it eliminates the need for bow/stern tie downs which always rub on bumpers etc. I was a kayak & canoe guide for many years so I've tried quite a few different systems for hauling boats on top of cars... I think this is best for canoes. If Thule has some sort of gunwale bracket then it really is 6 to a half dozen between brands.

FWIW

Default Do you not use front and rear tiedowns?

not sure if they are necessary,
but i was surprised to see that you didn't have the bow or stern tied down. have you ever had any problems with not using them? thanks. j.
