Are most Audi dealers using synthetic oil during regular maintenance?

A couple of years ago my dealer said that they used standard motor oil during regular maintenance even though Audi recommended synthetic. They would use synthetic for an exorbinant extra charge or an owner could supply their own oil. I have been supplying my own Mobil 1 since then. Today I took my allroad in for regular service but when I picked it up my oil was still in the back. I asked the service advisor why and he disappeared for a few minutes and returned smiling and said the technician had gone ahead and drawn synthetic oil out of their stock at no charge. Being a skeptic, I'm thinking they forgot to use my oil and used standard oil instead and just made up the story, but if Audi has started supplying synthetic oil at no charge then the story could make sense.
I know of no way to tell the difference between standard and synthetic just by looking - anyone have a way to tell?
Thanks.

...:-)
The dealer better be using synthetic as that's what Audi requires used since the (somewhat) recent oil spec change. If it matters, most dealers use Castrol Syntec rather than Mobil 1.

Good news(to me anyway)! I decided to Google the part number on my invoice for the oil used and was surprised to find several hits. The part number is for Syntec 5W40 synthetic oil - I guess the dealer has finally joined the 20th century re oil.
