As much as thing sucks gas, I take pride in knowing I still get better gas mileage than an RX-8...

...in AutoWeek's annual test wrap up, that thing with less horsepower (238), much less torque (~160 IIRC), and over 1,000 pounds less weight, gets worse gas mileage (something like 16.x average over the year) than our allroad does.

Very in-efficient combustion chamber design. Almost like the old flat heads. Thatâ€TMs why Mazda dropped it from all of its cars except for the sports car.
The RX's must have the smoothest power delivery out of any car I ever have driven however.

Depends on your definition of inefficient. It's a 1.3 liter engine that develops 238 HP. The reason it's so smooth is it fires 3 times for every revolution of each rotor. 2 rotors slightly out of phase and it really winds up. Lot's of hp, but not too much torque, especially on the low end.
