My first Audi; 2013 A4 Allroad? Talk me out of it
I was gonna make a long introduction but decided to keep it short and sweet. I'm thinking about buying a NAS 2013 Audi A4 Allroad with the 2.0. Roughly 120,000 on the odometer.
Ive never owned an German car. I own 2 old Land Rovers and despite all the hate and criticism they get from my peers, who themselves prefer Toyotas and Subarus, they have been fantastic vehicles to own, drive and maintain. I do most of the maintenance on them myself and they are easy to work on and easy to get parts for. I'm a DIY'er, not a master mechanic though. I learn as I go.
How bad is the 2013 and newer A4 Allroad? Are they extremely difficult to work on? Are the 2.0 4 cylinder engines as complicated and expensive to work on as the notorious S4 V8's? What are the most common issues they have? I've read that they burn oil and if not well maintained you can expect to have to rebuild. How are the electronics? Should I avoid the 2013 A4 Allroad? Or is it a good model and year?
How do these vehicles compare to any Subaru with their "symmetrical all wheel drive"?

Do a search for Q5's,A4's, years 2013-2016 and see what owners have reported for repairs - especially excessive oil consumption. Consensus seems to indicate anything past 100k and you'll be looking at possible engine rebuild. Make sure chain and tensioners her been done on car your looking at. I had a 2015 AR sold with 84k. Car was solid during my ownership but as the Audi sales manager said when I visited for possible trade/ sale "this is about the mileage when things happen". Good luck

If you look at posts on the 2.0 engine you'll see how troublesome these engines become around 90k without meticulous maintenance. Aside from normal wear items (brakes, tires, suspension) all require timing chain, tensioner & guide replacement, oil separator and water pumps around that mileage. If you can wrench a lot of these items can be done for considerable savings over the dealer. There are some reports that MY 2016 onward were marginally more reliable. Another item to check on 2013's is the steering rack. Single owner with gobs of repair slips are a good place to start if you still want to proceed.
