The software part is relatively minor, it's hosting and (mostly) maintenance.

It takes constant maintenance to keep a forum running. Other forums have spawned from AW to use kawf/bier formats, but they don't run themselves - somebody has to be committed to doing it. And having the hardware and bandwidth to host it.
