Default oil overfill question.

1st off, have already sfta. Here's the predicament.

Did a fall oil change about two weeks ago. Ran engine, shutting down and adding oil as needed. Was low, ie. off the dipstick low, but had taken 7 quarts up to that point (amount I've always used). Chalked it off to an excited filter. Drove around for about 4 days at this level, then added about 400-500ml's more. Level checked, had brought it to just above the low end of the range on dipstick. Fast forward to today. To ensure the filter was on tight, no slow leak down there, checked again this morning. Was probably an 1/8" above the upper limit on dipstick.

Obvious question: how the heck did the engine pull this off (delay in indicating true amt of oil)? Secondly, at what overfill point does this motor start to see the gasket/seal/02 damage? Should I be grabbing an extractor or loosening the filter to drain some of that off?

Default No gasket or seal damage but it will migrate into your intercoolers through the

crankcase evacuation system. Could also lead to carbon build up. For what it's worth the correct fill line is about 2/3 of the way through the crosshatch.

Default I've noticed this too; changed oil w/ 7 qts, level is low for a day or so, then at max.

I check the oil level after the car has been shut off for about a half-hour, which I understand to be the correct procedure on these, and most, cars.

I don't know why the oil initially reads low, even after several cycles of running the engine.

Default Thanx for that info. Time to get some tubing, pull some out. FWIW, due to the overfill concerns,

I typically keep it right at the low end of the crosshatching given that there's plenty of oil in there in the first place. Was shooting for that, but no dice.

Default A couple feet of 1/4" tubing attached directly to the nozzle of a $1.49 squirt bottle works great...

just stick it down the dipstick tube, aim into disposal container and pump away.
