Valentine One is the way to go. I have it in my X5 and it has paid for itself in only 2 weeks. Used the Passport Solo2 for about 6 months and it worked flawlessly as well, but the V1 is just better w/ front and rear sensors, and the arrows that alert you to where the cops are. The Solo2 is nice because it is cordless. It's almost identical to the new top-of-the-line Passport (the 8500 I think). I would only go with those 2 brands. If you are getting tickets and spending money anyway (or giving it to the gov't), you might as well spend a few more bucks and get something that will prevent the tickets. They pay for themselves quickly.
EDIT: I hardwired my V1 into the X5 garage door console and it works like a charm. No wires and it's always powered. You can probably do something similar with the AR.

..and I'd say that the extra $100 for the V1 is worth it. Not only does it have fore and aft antennas, but they're more sensitive than the 8500's. HPH

or just slow down a bit. Bear tarcker will alert you when ever a patrol car is in the area when equiped with a radio extender. (most are now) but check to see if your local law is on a trunk system. You will then need a trunking type scanner. (single din typ scanner will fit in the first aid slot in the rear arm rest, use a magnet typ cell ant) and your stealth.

... and necessary related gear is FROM Valentine Research:
Here's a link to their store.
The one complaint that I have is that there's no easy way to conceal and mount the V1 (like using dual remote mounted K40's), but the performance is worth the tradeoff.
And, while there are some great ways to mount the remote display (I like the Toymaker's famous one), the unit itself is so big and clunky it makes the remote display seem... well, silly.
So... if we could only work out appropriate packaging to do a concealed (read: completely invisible/stealth) mount of the main unit...
The NSX crowd used to mount them on the firewall behind the driver in custom-made non-blocking plastic boxes making them look like a third taillight unit ... but that wouldn't work for our panzerwagens.
Any ideas for completely stealth installs?

I've been out of the "faster" car world for 4-5 years now unfortunately, but picking up a new AllRoad next week so I have started thinking about this topic again. Somewhere at home collecting dust is a nice (was then anyway) Solo radar detector from Cincinnati Microwave--has radar technology changed enough to render this device totally worthless at this point? My guess is that it has and I'll be ponying up for a new detector soon--anybody have any thouhgts? Thanks.

...basically a radio scanner that listens for the radio transmissions that originate within patrol cars used to pass radio information to officer's handheld radios.
I find that the bearcat is a great concept, but rather tough in town (cause of the higher frequency of police cars that are nearby, but not on your route), and a challenge to use on longer road trips because you have to research the police frequencies used along your route.
Now.. if the Bearcat was mated to a GPS system that provided location to a mater uint, that did automated lookups of local and regional radio frequencies used by LEO's, we' have something that was worthwhile.

Me: "Uh - This dumb enough for ya, Dad?"
