Did you know you can get the OEM Nav unit for the allroad? And its also the am/fm and it has two SD slots for your MP3s and you can wire a dvd to it, blue tooth, and it replaces your stock radio head.

Default Re: how much was this?

Pioneer is $1400, and navigation interface looks much better than audi OEM. How much is OEM by the way?

Default Nice

I've got the D1 and I love it. Touch screen is much nicer than MMI interface in wife's Q7.

Default A solid RNS-e with install support is about $1.4K....lenthy

<center><img src="http://www.pixhost.com/pixp/petethepug/photo_070206_004.jpg"></center><p>Your resale will be higher with the OEM unit and... Your insurance will prefer to replace a NAV+ that was "stock" in your vehicle vs. an aftermarket system. In the last 60 days they just figured out how to unlock the NAV+ to enable TV/DVD while the vehicle is in motion and COMPLETLY update the software and hardware in a European NAV+ to the specs of a 2006 US unit.

This means no acknowledgement (nag) screen to select every time you turn your unit on, maps are shown in 3D, Radio data (RDS) will stream for all available FM stations and the on button will also work as a mute button.

The Pioneer unit is $2250 w/o bt. You could spend that much on a NAV+ and have XM or Sirius factory bluetooth with voice control (J unit). If you added in the cost of the Pioneer with a bt unit you could even equip you AR with a Phatbox/iPod, DVD player/TV tuner. A multi disc DVD player just came out that can be controlled from the NAV+ unit too.

It would just be a matter of time before the installers of the Pioneer unit told someone about the install into your car. $3K of Pioneer sitting in the dash of any car is a smash and grab waiting to happen.

So far a Master Audi Technician has installed: the RNS-e with a factory harness integrating XM, Phatnoise, DVD w/ TV tuner, aftermarket amplified TV antenna (concealed), factory submarine (SAT) antenna with diversity antennas added (and integrated) for XM, AM, FM and TV in the rear back windows antennas. IR remote pick up inside drivers dome light. He recently integrated the factory blue tooth. An additional plug for "input" of a portable DVD player rests next to the cup holders on the hump. A stealthy switch (thanks Ted!) for video in motion was also added along with the D1417 &amp; D1380. All accessories can be controlled from the multi function steering wheel and are viewable in the center console if the NAV is running. The bt is fully voice controlled. Total for parts and install has been just under $3.5K. To someone passing by only the factory NAV unit and the factory SAT antenna are visible.

Default Fun argument. Did my own install of AVIC-Z1 on Wifey's Toyota.

Any professional Pioneer dealer-installer should know what to do.

I pulled the Toyota 6-CD changer (it had issues) and installed the AVIC-Z1. I bought a NEW unit through Crutchfield on sale for $1800 (prices much better than that now) + added BT and iPod integration plus Crutchfield's (free) wiring harness. I saw other web deals for around $1400 and figured I would bite the bullet and go Crutchfield, in case I blew something up and needed their support. Total was around $2.1K. Bought a $50 back-up camera too; much cheaper than Pioneer's and it works fine.

Installation cost....my time in the garage all weekend away from Wifey and Kids. IE, 6-pack of beer and whining. Bought some new tools, wires, connectors, splicing crimp-ons....

Only complaint is some callers say there's too much echo on their end of the phone line when I'm using the BT hands-free connection through the car's stereo speakers &amp; included microphone.

I am a bit tempted to try AVIC-Z1 with the allroad. I have every bit of respect for the RSN-E fans and their arguments for a factory look and feel. It would be nice to have the nav and radio info show up in the Information Display from the RSN-E. But the Z1 adds features like storing the entire North American map database (20GBytes) on the Hard Drive, freeing up the DVD slot for Music or Video. And the Z1 can automatically rip your favorite CDs to the spare 10GBytes of HD as you play them. No need to creat playlists on your PC and program the SD memory card. And Z1 is also BT phone, iPod, Sat-radio, TV tuner friendly. And it has lots of extra connections for Aux A/V input and a remote TV screen (for rear passengers?) output. Plus all kinds of novelty features (3D views, g-force measurement, voice recog and text-to-speech announcements...)

You can do the video-in-motion overide for the AVIC-Z1 as well. Overide is also needed for some inputs to the Nav screens. Hunt around a little on the web for hints. I would have to tap the same basic signals for the RSN-E install (antenna, GALA, Park) as I would for the AVIC-Z1 (antenna, Speed Sense, Reverse, Parking Brake)

Don't get me wrong. I would probably be happier with the RSN-E look and feel matching my car, especially if I were to sell it some day. But I think you get a lot more flexibility and USEFUL features with the Z1 than the RSN-E. Compare pricing versus a NEW RSN-E, not refurbished.

You might ding the Z1 for having a HDD. Maybe the long-term reliability is lower with a spinning disk, and maybe not. Wifey's Toyota CD player sh@t the bed in 6 years. How long will a DVD player last? Then again, SD memory card slots ought to last forever on the RSN-E.

Ahh! Just do it. You should be happy.

Default by the time you are done with antenna, cable, etc. about 1100-1500.00

plus it does not throw codes as the security system and a few other systems run through the radio head.

Default And the OEM RNS-E understands speed signals produced by the allroad which is critical...

to proper navigation map display and movement. It also displays all music (MP3's), radio and navigation information in your DIS (driver information display) between the tach and the speedo. You're much better of going with OEM. More tightly integrated.

Default I have the OEM RNS-E with a Blaupunkt ME-3 player, and it is GREAT!

Very seamless integration, and not bad to have that OEM look. However, I will admit taht the navigation functions are not as fashly as some of the aftermarket units (it does not have touch screen, a quick "home" button, and some other features). However, for about $1000-1500 for the unit (including all adaptors and antennas) plus another 400-500 for a plug-n-play multimedia kit (like the one Proxus sells), you will have a very sleek unit that will be seamlessley integrated to your car.

Don't discount having the nav info appear in the instrument cluster, it really does help!
