Default Pre-cat Oxygen Sensors Replacement

The check engine light (CEL) lit up on my 2001 Allroad 2.7T. The trouble codes are: P1113 and P1131; problem with bank 1 sensor 1 and bank 2 sensor 1 - both pre-cat oxygen sensors.

- how easy (difficult) a job is it to replace 'em?
- can someone post (or point to) clear and detailed instructions/procedure to replace the sensors?
- any special tools required?
- after diagnosis, it turned out the bank 1 sensor 1 is bad. Should I replace just that sensor or both?

Thanx!

Moderate difficulty, it take an experianed tech about 30-40 min. bank 1, about 45 min. for bank 2, if you need instructions you should probably have someone else replace them, a special OXS (oxygen sensor)socket, 1/2 universal joint, extension and ratchet required for bank#2, a more standard OXS socket with 3/8 extension and ratchet for bank 1, only change OXS for bank with DTC (diagnostic trouble code). There are no longer any mileage intervals to replace sensors on OBDII cars. You replace as needed when indicated with DTCs. If bank 2 had a DTC and it was cleared it will most likely be back.

Default Are you over 80k miles? The '01 carried an 80k emissions warranty above and

beyond the 50k warranty...I had mine done, but then also had to have the cats done, all after 50k but before 80k...just a thought.

It has about 77k miles on it. I did not know about the warranty since I am the second owner of the car. I will call Audi and check if it is under warranty and if the warranty was transferable in case the owners changed. Thanx for the info.

Default What Girlroad is referring to is the EPA warranty..

the car is warranted to the EPA (not the owners) for 8/80K miles on very specific components. (ECU, Cats, O2 Sensors) It is in the warranty book if you have it.

I called Audi USA and they said O2 sensors are not covered under the warranty. The warranty is not a manufacturer's warranty but kind of a federal law. Here is the link: http://www.epa.gov/otaq/consumer/warr95fs.txt. And according to it O2 sensors are not covered, unfortunately.

I'm at 74k miles right now and my CEL came back on. I'm getting a new cat from the dealer Thursday.

Default My error, they are not a direct covered part...however

if the ECU went bad and fried the 02 sensors then the sensors would be covered.
