Default Question about steering...

Am I just noticing this just now or is it a problem if the steering wheel has a little bit of 'play'(I'd say maybe a 1/4 inch) at speeds over 35 mph? I felt it on the highway at first...

Default 83k

I recently replaced the driver side air spring(arnott and did it myself). Also I checked the steering fluid and was above max...so I removed some. Checked the control arms and they look fine.

Ideally, there should be no play in any rack and pinion system.

Default if those are original arms then you are probably due. Jack each side up one at a time and push/

pull with your hand at the 3 and 6 o'clock position on each tire. If you hear any clicks or clunks or the tire moves without moving the steering wheel then you should be able to track down where it is giving at. If you undid the pinch bolt in order to do the airspring you may want check and make sure it didn't loosen up on you. Again if you are on all original parts I would plan to replace all four upper control arms and both outer tie rod ends. the lower curved control arms would be my next suspect and then inner tie rod ends. These just seem to the order they have gone on my cars. I guess you could have a bad rack but I think that is very unlikely.

Default I couldn't loosen up the pich bolt

I did it the other way(the two bolts in the top shock aluminum cast). But I'll move the tires tomorrow like you suggested. Thanks!
