Default Radar detector choices

I was about to by a Valentine 1 radar detector until I read an article in the Feb. edition of Automobile magazine. Both the Bel 980 and Escort Passport 8500 scored higher in categories such as KA band detection and had less false alarms. Does anyone have any thougts on detectors before I make the investment, thanks in advance.
Also, if you have any information regarding the types of radars police use please let me know - K band, KA band, laser etc....

Default V1 uber alles! Accept no substitute. Check out Car & Driver's annual detector test.

They do the most thorough job IMHO.

Default Re: Radar detector choices

On Valentine's site Mike Valentine talks about the Automobile test and states that the author is biased. Although it's obviously Valentines site, his points seem valid.

Default No question: V1 is the way to go.

It's not a radar detector it's a radar locator. Knowing where the location of the radar is a huge help.

When we bought our allroad the dealer did a beautiful job of hardwiring the V1 just below the rear view mirror. Beautiful!

Default V1 and I will post a hardwire how to soon...

V1 is the only choice as far as I'm concerned.

While it may not be (yet to be proved) the most sensitive detector on the market, with it's front/rear sensors it gives you more real information in a glance. where the signal is coming from and how strong. I've had passports in the past, bought a V1 with the allroad. While my passport was older model the V1 is vastly better.

As far as bands go, K & Ka are the most often actual radar signals I see in Colorado. X band seems to be mostly door-openers and some rural police still use it. I'm sure that is regional as to what is "most often used".

Also I hardwired mine in myself. I also took a bunch of digital pics when I did it. I very was pleased with the outcome and am working on writing it all up (which has taken three times longer than the install did I've got all but the power wire-in write up done. I WILL finish it up this weekend and post the how-to.

The detector is installed under the rear-view mirror with remote display on the steering column. No visiable wires (except from units to closest interior car point) and required no modification to the car.

fj..

Default Please post them soon!!!

I would love to see your pics and instructions for mounting the V1. I am going to do mine myself as well. Thought that I could learn from you and save some time and headache.

Thanks!!!

Default Sorry to disappoint, Passport 8500 is best

Bought both units for 30 days. Returned the V1. The expert mode of the 8500 is just as good as the V1, perhaps even better. The range is what surprised me the most. The 8500 would pick up close to quarter mile further than the V1...
