Just got bagged for 84 in a 65(yes, RMcQ, on 97 AND at night) and was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on a good radar detector. A search showed alot of V1 mentions, but no real endorsements...

Wouldn't use anything else unless it was proven to be significantly better AND it had the same features. I find the bogey counter and directional arrows critical to understanding how many signals I'm receiving and where they're coming from. Nobody else offers this.
Yes, it is expensive. But how much will 1 ticket cost you in terms of fines, court costs, lawyer fees, and/or insurance premiums...

After reviewing I went with a Beltronics. Have had it for a couple of years and does the job YMMV.

http://www.speedzones.com/</a

I went with the Passport due to being a few bucks less than the V1. Depending on which review you read, one claims better than the other. In my opinion they are about equal. The V1 gives you "arrows" which the Passport does not. Either would make a fine choice, I am sure you will find diehards of each one. I picked my Passport up for $270 shipped from an authorized dealer which sealed the deal.

I HIGHLY and I do mean HIGHLY recommend the
Valentine V1 radar detector.
I believe in it so much both my and my wife's car
have V1's.
Best quality, best sensitivity and the arrows.
Once you've lived with the arrows you'll never
want to give them up.

I bought a used detector on Ebay for $80 and hardwired it into my other car... looked nice, but was a piece of junk. It would tell me about the radar when I was about 50 feet from the cop... hardly enough warning to react. I put it back on ebay for a loss and cleaned up my wiring.
I dont even remember what brand it was, but if I decide I need one again, I'll go with the Valentine One.

Their tests track the motortrend test posted by mustbeaudi. I think Belltronics detectors are great and worth the money. The are a couple hundred less than a V1 and protect just as well. Looks like the 200 pays for the arrows.

I knew I had read some things about it in the past, but couldn't put my finger on the source. I did a quick search and found some recently posted details about radartest and speedzones. This is in line with what I had heard before. Believable? This source sounds like he knows the players...
"radartest.com is owned by Craig Peterson and speedzones.com is owned by Carl Fors and both have consulted for radar gun manufacturers AND radar detector manufacturers. Both offered their services to Mike Valentine and both were declined by Mike and since then, the V1 has never been the top detector in their tests. Also, it is quite a coincidence that whichever detector company is using either of these consultants, THAT detector will get the highest rating on those web sites."
