So the question is; Did you stop the BMW mid-way up the driveway? Were speeds the same?

Nice pic

I stole this from your link, thought it was interesting and others might like to read it. I found the part about Torsen & Torque Sensing being different differentials interesting. I thought Torque Sensing was Torsen. Are they correct?

"Haldex
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Haldex is a Swedish company manufacturing for example the Haldex limited slip coupling used in vehicles with automatic all wheel drive systems to engage and disengage a secondary axle when needed.

"Haldex" refers to the aforementioned differential system — its most prominent use is in all transverse engine 4x4 models of the VWAG group: (Audi A3 and TT, and Volkswagen Golf ), making them non-permanent 4x4s, unlike longitudinal engine models (Audi A4, A6, A8, Volkswagen Passat) which use a Torsen-like differential. However, its short reaction time (only a seventh of a wheel spin) relative to systems like a viscous coupling, and ability to fully lock mitigate its theoretical disadvantage to a full-time AWD (like Torsen) setup.

The Haldex LSC has been used in AWD models of VW and Audi cars under the name of "Quattro" and "4-motion." The same labels have also been applied to Torsen-based, full-time AWD systems from both VW and Audi which has led to confusion and some amount of heated debate as to the relative merits of each system. This is nothing more than confusion over nomenclature; due to the fact that the original Audi Quattro coupe did use a torque-sensing center differential (not Torsen, however), many fans believe that "quattro" refers to said type of AWD system, not realizing that it is simply a trademark (It is interesting to note that "quattro" is also used on the Audi Q7 SUV, which uses neither Torsen nor Haldex; instead, it uses a BorgWarner system.

Haldex Traction is a part of the Haldex Group that is responsible for manufacturing and marketing the Haldex AWD system.

The Haldex AWD system is currently used in the following:
Volkswagen: Golf 4Motion, Bora 4Motion,Beetle RSi,Sharan 4Motion,Multivan 4Motion,R32
Audi : A3/S3 Quattro, TT Quattro
Skoda Octavia 4x4
Seat León Alhambra,Altea Freetrack
Volvo: S40 AWD,S60 AWD,S60R AWD,S80AWD,V50 AWD,V70 AWD,V70R AWD,Volvo XC70, XC90AWD
Bugatti Veyron
Ford Freestyle, Five Hundred, Mercury Montego,Land Rover LR2

The fourth generation Haldex system is called XWD (pronounced Cross-Wheel Drive) and will debut on the 2008.5 Saab 9-3.

The XWD system is based on completely new technology and includes such features as Active rear electronic limited slip differential. Pre-emptive engagement of rear wheels under hard acceleration.

THe Wiki said it:

"Haldex" refers to the aforementioned differential system — its most prominent use is in all transverse engine."

The allroad and the entire a4, a6, S6, A8, line never used Halldex.

Halldex is not the true quattro system. As Wiki stated, Halldex is the system used for horizontally placed motors for VW and Audi, ie: 1.8 T, 2.0 and 3.2 in the A3 and VW Jetta, Golf, R32, etc.

If you drove one in the snow you would actually feel it engage from front drive to AWD.

Quattro regardless of the name and branding, is a full time AWD System.

How do you know that was an awd bmw? Looks pretty rwd to me (and without snow tires at that).

Also, the "x-drive" was introduced for the x3, x5 (2006+) and on the 2006+ e90 3-series. The previous -05 3-series had awd but not x-drive (now you could say they are just marketing words, but the awd system changed drastically from the e46 to the e90).

P.S. I've owned a b5 a4, b6 s4 and now a b8 a4. I've also had a e46 rwd 330 and a e90 awd 330xi and a e90 rwd 330i... Ask me anything...
