Default Recent loaner- A4 !.8q. Fuel ecomony= allroad....

or pretty close.
Allroad had to go in for rotors (third time) and 40K service. For three days prior to taking in, recorded my commute fuel ecomony and registered 16.5.
Had nice A4 1.8tq loaner. recorded fuel economy on same commute route for 2.5 days and got 16.8.

So, smaller car, smaller engine does not equate to better economy on my commute route. Not surprised. Where the allroad accelerates in traffic with low end torque in tip, the A4 required revs to keep up same velocity. But on the open road, different story. Best I ever get from the allroad at 75 on the highway is 22, the little A4 got 26-27.

Just my $.02 on a Friday morning

Default I concur...

I had a Passat for about 9 months with 1.8T and did not find that it got great fuel economy at all. It might be the way I drive I am not sure, but I only gave up a few MPG for the switch to the allroad. I think the 1.8T could stand to use a 6th gear for better fuel economy. It always seemed that cruising at 80-85 mph ran the rpms too high.

The best 4cyl turbo fuel economy I ever got was from a few Saabs I owned. I had a 02 aero and 99 viggen with 250 hp and got 29-31 mpg on hgwy and averaged about 26-28 on my commute given my aggressive driving.

Default Probably because you are beating on it like a red headed step child

No wait... that was me. The last loaner I got from teh dealer years ago was an A4 CVT Frontrak. I didn't know it was a CVT until I wanted to punch into into a small hole in traffic. I thought teh torque converter was slipping or something when the revs went up and just hung there at 6,000 or so. I got bad mileage in that car as I was always accelerating and braking just to see how the CVT behaved.

The '04 A4Q loaner I got had same mileage, and I wasn't too hard on it.

Default Only drove it the same way I drive every morning on my commute. Just took

more throttle for the little 4 cylinder to keep up.
