Default I bought it just because I was not scheduled to go in for service for a few days and.......

the power steering unit was making a moaning sound. That said, if I had not purchased the fluid and done the refill myself I probably never would have realized what the problem was. I would have just given the dealership credit for "fixing" the power steering. Now that I have experienced the difference of driving with a properly filled unit, I want to ensure I can keep it topped off without having to visit the dealership frequently. Apparently it is necessary to top off every few weeks.

Default not true, i put fluid in power steering once in 2 1/2 years of ownership, never serviced by dealer

if you need it every few weeks(once a month) there has to be a leak.

Default Dealer will be checking for leak today. I have never put in any previously, either, but am told...

that it really evaporates. Maybe since I live at 8500 ft elevation it evaporates even faster. In any event, I really need to keep it topped off.

I had the same problem (02 6spd) and it damaged the steering. I can't remember what was replaced but it was substantial

Default fluid is mineral oil, have seen uninformed people on this board say it's "mineral spirits based"

mineral oil can evaporate but not quickly, especially from a sealed system. if it leaks bad don't let the dealer get away with the oil evaporates pitch so they don't have to do their jobs. i have put 1 or 2 oz. in my car since new. can't see why your elevation should make you use more, but???
