Replacement battery

Is it necessary for the dealer to replace the battery? Do any codes need to be reset or is a simple remove and install. Also, I have about 30K and 4 years on a OEM battery with no starting problems. I don't want the wife to get stuck. Is it due for replacement?

on the odometer- probably much longer than I should have gone. I picked one up at Advance Auto and they installed it for me. I did have to call around to find someone that had the right battery.
Make sure you have the code for your radio. You will need to reenter it if the battery is pulled. I've seen these little 9V battery things you can put in the 12V socket that are supposed to keep power to the car when a battery is pulled. Don't have any first hand experience with them though.

no,
no and yes
no
battery life is a combination of many things. Weather and use. If its working fine, then wait untill you have a hard start.
You can buy them in many places and installation is back breaking(weight), but still an easy DIY

I think as long as the radio is the original that came with the vehicle you won't need to enter the codes when the battery is disco'd.

My battery (in an '01 A6 2.7T, sorry, I'm lurking in the Allroad Forum) had to be replaced at 5 years.
I went to a local Indy Shop (Firestone at 50th and Xerxes for anyone from Minnesota) and had an "MT-91" battery put in for about $100.
Don't pay the dealer's rates for this.
My radio wasn't disconnected when they did the replacement. If it is, you will need the code for the radio that is in the radio manual. You should make sure that you have that code available someplace and you shouldn't keep it in the car.
I wouldn't wait past 5 years.
