Do you still have the light on the dash or did you figure a way out of it?
I had a thought about the sensors - seems like they are probably sending a resistance value to the computer... "x height equals so many ohms" if that were the case would not a fixed value resistor do the trick? At 65000 miles I'm sure it won't be long before I need to replace a strut.

My latest thinking is that I just need to trick the sensors into thinking that the car is at level 1 since my '01 has manual control and can remain forever in level 1. I am a little lower than the 402'd level 1 that the car previously thought was "right" so I only need a little to make the car think it is ok again.

Why not just mod the 402 mod to solve the problem? If you lock in at Level 1 and then tell the computer that the car should be sitting a little lower than it had been with the 402 mod, then it won't complain, right?
