I have the same problem as the poster. So, if the blinkers stop working, but the hazard flasher does work, you think it's a stalk problem? Thanks!

I have a '99 Golf, VAG product, signal lights would work intermittently, hazards worked fine. Replaced hazard switch/relay (relay switch one part) and intermittent signal lights corrected.

I had the turn signal/wiper stock on my '01 go out about 2 years ago. The dealer said they were having problems with the switch assembly embedded in the steering column. They replaced the whole switch for about $300. No problems since then.

I'd say it's the relay. I've replaced two over 7 years. IME, it's common for the indicators not work, but the hazards do.
