Default Signs and symptoms of failing TCC

I test drove my AR with the vag and got a couple of results which were not to my liking.

Here's what i got,
- (Before the test drive i cleared any codes that i had on the Transmission)

- When tcc was in "control" or partially applied (gears 1-3) I had the tcc slip speed over 120 RPM at times, and when the tcc was closed it was over 20 RPM at times.

for those that don't know, this is all on the VAG in the transmission Block 007, and the normal slip speed should be.
Partially applied tcc 20-120, Closed tcc 0-20

- Gears 1-3 When my tcc was partially applied the output RPM (block 001) was higher than the input, which is strange because its supposed to be the other way around

- Gears 4-5 when the tcc was closed the out put RPM was higher than the input by 1000! Shouldn't both the Input and the output supposed to be the same when it is closed.
also a sign for tcc slipping is when the input is greater than the output in tcc lock-up, mine is the opposite for some reason.

- RPM was at 3000 doing 65 mph, and 3200 doing 70.

when i got back i rechecked the the tranny and it had one code.
17125 - P0741

Is my tcc slipping? And if i considered to change the tcc what would be the cost? and what else would i need to consider while i have the Transmission out?

Sorry for the long post, just wanted to be thorough

You need a torque converter. The internal TCC seal is leaking. The seal gets hard and comes apart, so adding additives or replacing ATF is a waste of time if you are trying to see if that will cure it. The ZF reman TCs have the improved seal.

Wasn't the tcc improved after 2003, so if i find a used one, say a 2004 with little mileage, would that work? save $300 that way. or is it not worth the risk?

Have yours rebuilt with the new Viton seal...ACES in Cali rebuilds them for about $450 http://aceconverter.com/index.php?ma...&cPath=140_144

I wouldn't bother with finding a used one or a new one from Audi ($$$)

Yes, it is an all too common problem with the V8 C5s.

You should be able to get it done for under 2 grand from an Audi independent shop. Takes a good day+ on the books to drop the tranny. Putting in the TC is the easy part.

Used torque converter is a risk of getting another bad unit, plus with all the labor involved to remove the transmission, its not worth it. I got mine from Eriksson Industries. Just send them back your old unit when you get it replaced. They are an authorized ZF rebuilder.

hey guys i just found this post, i'm a little worried that the Torque converter is not the only issue.. or is it?
i am only getting 17125 for codes, and it drives fine.

http://search.audiworld.com/showthread.php?t=2811056

change valve body??
any input would be appreciated.

AFAIK, the valve body has never been suggested for replacement for P0741 code, only the torque converter. There is no published TSB or data linking the TC and valvebody together as part of any repairs for a single issue.
