Default Smelly AC

What is causing the smell after running the AC? I noticed on a few of my cars.

I assume some mold/else is building up on external or internal heat exchanger?

Will cleaning help?

If so: what to use and how to do it on a 2.7T AR?

Replace the internal air filter? Just a guess...

Some people spray Lysol into the air intake area after removing the air filter. Audi has a special aerosol for this purpose as it is rather common. Here's a commercial brand specifically designed for the job.

And an Audi bulletin...

and the product Audi uses...

Just to clarify: cabin air filter/intake, not engine air intake, right?

Oh yes, the air intake for the cabin air, not the engines air intake.

Remove the air filter and run the system at high temperature with the air conditioner off (ECON mode) before spraying anything into the system. This dries out any condensation on the cooling coils

Read and follow the Audi Tech Bulletin even if you're just using Lysol.
