does anyone know of a good snow tire for the allroad. i have the pirellis that came with the car but am concerned that they dont seem aggressive enough of a tread. i switched to an aggressive tread on my last car (lexus rx 300) and the difference in snow was amazing. i was thinking of getting something more snow oriented and switching during winter as i go up to tahoe to ski a lot.

For what it's worth I have the Pirelli's, and my buddy has the Goodyears. We've had our ARs up in the snow (Sierras like you) and found both tires to be pretty bomber. On good snow I can comfortably drive between 40-50, whereas in my truck it would be more like 25-35. Anyhow, keep us posted on your selection if you make a switch.

I am not sure you will need snow tires since you are a weekend warrior in California. Here in Minnesota Winters I ran Michelin Alpin Pilots on ATP S5 wheels and found them to be completely bombproof in both snow and ice at all speeds. I kept looking for deeper and deeper snow to play in. For me it is easy since I switch wheels and tires every 6 months.

In Anchorage we're on black ice and snow for about six months and I'm probably going to get the 16" look-alike wheels that Tire Rack sells and put on Nokia Hakkapeliitta 1 studded tires in a relatively narrow width.
I've had these on all of our cars (and even my bicycle) for the last three or four years and like the good handling and great stopping on ice. Can't wait to try them with the ESP.

I've always found that quattro makes a significant difference in acceleration and even handling in the snow but it sure doesn't help your braking distances ! If you want to stop on snow you realy need snow tires ! So even if it is just for weekends up in the mountains I'd still get them. All you need is one panic stop and you'll have saved your money. SPeaking from experience there !
