Default Yep, it's a useful feature

I know a guy who racks up thousands and thousands of miles in those conditions... the indicator can really help. This is especially true in areas where the temp can quickly vary by +/- 10°... good to know the probability of a corner being icy.

Yeah, in a sultry female voice it sings, "Baby, it's cold outside..." LOL!

Default exactly. but doesn't that make it more dangerous?

black ice can form very quickly in small patches. one minute a corner is fine, then some fog touches the road surface and bam a minute later the corner is covered in a thin layer of invisible ice.

normal thick ice that accumulates on the road surface when the AIR is also sub freezing is more uniform, more visible and usually accompanied by snow or frost. So people know the normal ice is present, making it less dangerous.

P.S. a safety PSA:

to make black ice you need three things:
+below freezing road surface
+above freezing air temp
+fog

so everyone watch out for those conditions. and mind the little snowflake on the dash :P

Wrong. In this temp range, immediate micro-hydroplaning is most likely to happen.

This thread was the closest I could find related to my question - but it contained no answer for me. Where is the sensor for the outside air temp that is displayed on the instrument cluster information center? Is this a readily serviceable part? My displayed temps used to be pretty accurate but have become increasing less so. Seems like the sensor (or a bad ground) would be the first thing to check. Please educate me....thanks.
