Default Spark Plug Ejecting While Driving

I am new to this message board. Recently while driving our 2005 Allroad TT a spark plug ejected itself from the engine. The resulting damage to the threads resulted in a significant repair bill. I am contemplating contacting Audi for remimbursement.

Audi serviced the vehicle at 49K miles, it now has 64K miles.

I spoke with the service manager at the dealership. The guy indicated he has repaired several vehicles with the same problem.

In my 35 years of driving I have never experience a spark plug even coming loose, yet alone exploding out of the engine.

Is this a factory defect? Any advise or information you can give would be appreciated.

Cheers,

Default One of my co workers had the same issue with his 4Runner.

I think this is a service/mechanic issue and not a problem with Audi 2.7T Heads..

Default I've seen it many times. I've found that if someone hasn't properly tightened the spark plug, the

combustion gasses leak through and leave deposits on the threads. You have to clean the threads and use a antiseize to lubricate so that the plug is seated and torqued properly. If you don't, then it will continue to loosen on its own.

Default Ford 4.5 and 5.4 do it all the time. Poor thread depth in the head. Audi's are deep,

I would think poor installation.

Default Not an uncommon problem in general...

just never heard of it in an Audi. As others have said it could be from the plugs not being tight enough. Or, what I've seen more often is OVER TIGHTENING of the plugs. On an aluminum head this can easily cause the threads to start to pull out. With the combustion pressure it blows the plug and threads with it. Result is either heli-coil (cheap fix) or machining the head (expensive fix).

Not sure if Audi will cover it if it was out of the warranty period unless you can show that it was the fault of the Audi Tech when it was in for its last service. If the car was not in for service in the last 15k miles, you may have a hard time with the claim.
