Well...
With serial ports (RS-232) becoming harder and harder to find on newer laptops I would go with a USB cable. Other than the PC interface, there is no difference as far as VAG-COM is concerned.
Ross-tech does not guarantee the operation of a serial cable with a USB->Serial converter.
Also, I beleive the VAG-COM software (newer versions) will only work with Ross-Tech/VAG-COM cables... So do not think you can get away buying a cheapy from ebay.
Definetly a worth while investment for VAG family vehicle owners.
