suggestions on hitches?

I used the Curt class I and tow about 2500 lbs easily.
Here is my original post: https://www.audiworld.com/forums/sho...ighlight=hitch
I have used it without a problem for about a year. Just last weekend I pulled about 3000 lbs of rocks in my trailer behind it. I have double checked the bolts and it does not seem stressed at all.

its not the bolts you are concerned about, but the integrity of the steel they attach to. Excessive weight and torque/tongue weight will cause the steel to warp and possible rip. The spar tire cavity was not designed to hold up like this.
The major difference between the Uhaul/Curtis and OEM style is that the OEM REPLACES the rear bumper elements and is INTERNALLY BOLTED into the frame of the ar, not the sheet metal.

I saw this somewhere...
Pretty sure the image came from the archives. I'm planning on having two mounts made...the 2" shown here for the bike rack, and a ball for pulling my little utility trailer.

I've decided to build one myself as well. There are actually some
hitches out there designed like the NA version, e.g. one made for the Dodge Magnum. That means there are some parts that can work with a basic hitch configured vertically that are available through hitch suppliers. There's even an adapter for anything light-duty needing a traditional horizontal receiver. (see attachments)
Based on lots of great and detailed information from this list and other sources, I'm creating a CAD file of the design I'm making, which will be very much like the NA version originally offered. I won't pull anything like a race car trailer, but maybe a Hobie, so I want it strong. I believe any strong design that utilizes the frame members like the original did is better than the Curt Class I that goes into sheet metal.
I'll add to the CAD model with as-built dimensions once I get to the stage of installing it. Once I get it done I'll post the file if anyone wants to try fabbing it for themselves. Gonna be a while till I get to it though - maybe end of summer...

Westfalia hitch
Chris,
Just got finished, oh, about a couple of hours ago with mounting the Westfalia hitch to my 03 Allroad, took me about 4.5 hrs.
I bought it from PF Jones in England, your POC would be Danny, danny@pfjones.co.uk .
This hitch is completely hidden when not in use, but I don't know how you would mount a bike rack to it? Cost me not quite $600 including the shipping. You wouldn't need the wiring harness as the 03 is already prewired for towing.

I am actually looking for something like this and a hidden hitch. any advise or just eurohitch.com?? Did this group buy go through?

Don't know about the group buy. I will probably weld up a prototype this winter (2009-2010). I'll do a full CAD drawing file of the completed unit once I know it fits correctly and I'll send that to anyone that wants it.
Does anyone have a wire diagram for the trailering plug that Audi supplied to the later models? I'd like to be able to put the proper plug on and have the correct turn signal speeds, as well as disable the backing sensors when a trailer is connected.
Dave.
