Default This surprised me -- 2.7T v 4.2

I was on the Saw Mill River Pkwy in NY today -- a 2-lane in each direction road littered with stop lights in places. Comeup behind an A6 4.2 as we approach one such red light. Turns green he goes. I'm right with him (2.7T tip no mods) I'm in S. I think he noticed that I kept up with him and we come to the next stop light. Now I'm next to him. Green light -- I dont floor it, but wanna see what his intentions are. He pulls ahead. I do floor it and I'm by him real fast. We get to about 75 mph. Next light. He is a bit pissed/surprised. This time I do floor it. We stay together till 30mph, then no contest (did he loose his nerve?) --blew him away. Now even if he wasn't totally pushing it, the difference was so great in the allroad's favor that I came away thinking that I was real glad I got the 2.7T ar. I just don't see the 4.2 being the rocket I'd want it to be if I paid more for it. (I do like the A6 4.2 appearance much more than the 2.7 A6) But in the allroad -- based on this very unscientific, but surprising, whooping my 2.7T gave this particular 4.2 and we were both pushing it -- I just don't see it. That is all...discuss.

Default Great story, nice results

I'll be on the lookout for any wimpering 4.2s since I travel the sprain/taconic everyday, LI to Yorktown.

Default I've done this sort of thing, too...

...and I put it off to the elevation here (>7000'). Maybe our shorter gearing has something to do with itas well. HPH

I think the shorter gearing helps out, are you at a high altitude?

Default I think its a different kinda 'tude...

its a NY kind of thing. Low altitude. Major attitude. I don't think it makes the car any faster tho.

I don't see the point you presented in your statement except your personal emotion expression in the way you drive your car. I owned the 4.2 AR since July 03, for my honest opinion this is indeed a good car. I remenber two years ago one of my cars was ML55, as I was driving on NJ AC express highway, I noticed someone on the next lane did the samething. I didn't bother to be over taken. The 04 AR manual on page 310 engine data specifies that for 27T the premuim is the fuel to use, the regular for 4.2 and this is the 1st import V8 that I know that runs on regular. The 4.2, to me, is as fast as the LS430 which now and then I drive, and almost as nimble as E430 I used to drive, but this is the only car enjoyable to be in , in these past ten snowy days.

Default Gotta know the road...

Its a very narrow two lane parkway..full of twists. A guy who has a great car but no testicular fortitude will be very shy on this road... even the best have to inhale to get through it... Well done smokin the 4.2!!

Are you saying that both Lexus LS430 and Mercedes E430 performs better than the Allroad 4.2?

Default I love my ar 4.2. I don't particularly care

whether my previous 2.7 tcould have out-gunned me on the sawmill or not. I love the seemlessness of acceleration, and that's my emotional ticket. Frankly they are both really fast cars off the mark, but don't expect that if someone cared to match you measure for measure in a 4.2 that you would see a similar result as before. That V8 is a bear when called upon.
