Default Suspension Problem - Idiot guide required

I hope you can help, I have a 2001 allroad which I have owned since Nov 2004 with no major issues except a new battery in Feb this year. I have recently noticed that the car seems to be slightly lower at the rear right hand side. When I move the car through all of the height levels everything works fine except the this corner is constantly an inch or so lower than the others. I am getting no warning lights and the height doesn't seem to change overnight. I am planning to do a thorough check with a tape measure this weekend, I don't have access to VAGCOM is there anything else I can check or fix easily? Can I reset the height without VAGCOM? What happens if I disconnect the battery? Thanks in anticipation, I have the car booked in to the local dealer next week for a diagnostic check but would appreciate any comments you can give so I don't end up buying a new component when all I needed was some adjustment for example.

Default sorry for the problem.. but unless your dealer..

will reset your height under warranty...if you have one..then you do need a VAG to correct it yourself. It would be similar to the 402 mod to lower the total height, you would have to measure and convert to MM, etc. to set the car level.

The easy way is to post on the regional forum you are in that you need someon with a VAG.. most will be glad to help..with or without the bribe of a beer.

Default If not under warranty, you might consider buying VAG-COM

Instructions for adjusting the height are well documented under the 402 mod. You can buy VAG-COM software and cable for a PC from Ross-Tech, or ProDiag software and cable for a PDA from Shade Tree. Both cost about $250.

Default Use enclosed VAG tool locator. Also, I have a similar issue...

with my suspension heights. Left side wheels are dead-on, right rear is higher by 0.5 to 1 inch, and right front is also high but only by 0.25 to 0.5 inch.

I have a VAG, and have made 402 adjustments several times to try to even things out. Adjustments seem to work well on all corners except the right rear. Maybe I'm doing something wrong? To summarize the procedure:

- engine off, key on
- go to level control module
- enter adaptation, got to channel 1
- wait for level 1 / level 2 cycle
- enter ch 1 value, test, save
- repeat for ch 2-4
- enter 01 for ch 5, test, save (ERROR)
- done, go back

What should I do next to make sure the new settings are locked in?
- back out of the module?
- change heights to test?
- turn on the engine?
- other?

Also, I monitor measuring block 4 and the four settings are never all at 0.0mm when in level 2. Right/Left sides are always off at least 3mm from each other. If all 4 corners are balanced equally, should the 4 measuring block values match up at each level setting?

About 6 months ago, a very well reputed mechanic who does a lot of Audi work accidentally put my car on a chassis lift without using jack mode...I'm wondering if this is the source of my problem.

VAG Locator

Default Compare the condition and position of the height

sensors on each corner, maybe one is bent or out of alignment.

Default You should reset the suspension hieghts by following the 402mod but key in the actual ride height...

"X" in the following picture. e.g. if X=390mm, then key in 390.

Then drive several minites.
Then measure the ride heights at LEVEL 2 to see if they match with the message group 004. e.g. if the measured ride hieghts for (Front L, Front R, Rear L, Rear R) are (402mm, 400mm, 403mm, 410mm), then the group 4 should be (0, -2, 1, 8), the deviation from reference level(402mm).
Sure, the acceptable tolerance is within 5 mm. If you have time, you can make it very accurate.
When do 402mod, I still measure the real ride height. Then add the value that I want to lower, because I found that the actual ride height of the 4 wheels will never be equal.

Default Correct, in fact I suggest

making the measurements after logging in and going to the first adaptation channel. Then put in the values.

You may need to rinse, lather, repeat once or twice with fresh measurements before it's "perfect".

Default Thanks....

Thanks for the replies guys, I'm going to do some further checking this weekend. I've got it booked in next week for a free diagnostic at the dealers and I will then see what the best fix is. I have a 3rd party warranty which covers suspension however I doubt it covers Audi labour rates. In the mean time I will see if I can get my hands on a VAGCOM. Thanks again.
