Tell me about snow tires. Tire Rack says only one choice because of wheel size. I have
experience with the Bliz. WS-50 on my Honda. They turned the Honda from a snow pig, into a snow sled. But I assumed there would be better handling (not as soft) with just as good ice/snow traction for the higher performance Audi? I've read that some of you have Pilot Alpine. What size? How do they handle?

I went with Artic Alpins; similar to the Pilots...a bit less expensive, but more
snow traction. Only Q rated (99 mph), however. My local Michelin dealer sold
me a -1 (16") wheel and tire combo for about what Tire Rack charges; same
ATP wheels, too. Had 7 inches of snow on Friday and car did extremely well.

Re: Tell me about snow tires. . .
Well... I live in snow for 7 months of the year. During oct-apr I get to see parts of my dirt driveway once or twice. It ain't quite minn-ah-so-ta, (the sun comes out where I live but still significant. So far the stock goodyears for ice and hardpack snow have been more than up to the task. I've had 3 snows since I got the allroad, the deepest of which was 6" (and fairly wet which is usually a showstopper) it didn't notice much. I may be in the market for snow tires when these wear out but currently don't see the need to rush right out for them. I _will_ investigate some lower profile summer tires in a few months though. Given another season the tire companys will probably have some winter shoes that fit our allroads I expect.
Just remember that ESP & quattro will get you going as quickly as you want to, regardless of conditions. Stopping on the other hand is more controlled by physics than traction control systems and to some extent how good your snow tires are. It _is_ amazing that it keeps everything pointed straight while sliding right past where you wanted to stop though.
