How hard is it to install? I did a search and got conlicting reports. Cheapest place to get the OEM hitch is clair audi, correct? Thanks.

Its not hard to install, takes two or three hours. You will be able to do it yourself. But, DONT get an aftermarket hitch. The OEM hitch attaches directly to the frame, and is class 2. The aftermarket one bolts to sheet metal and is class 1. You don't save that much... get the OEM.

Will the OEM hitch handle a receiver type bike rack or is it really for trailering only?

Default Well for that use I'd get a dalan class 1 hitch, its like $200 IIRC.

You probably could get the OEM hitch to work with a little tweaking, but it costs more and is over kill for a bike rack.

Default Or get a welder to fabricate something for your OEM hitch so you could use it for bike....

.. The OEM hitch is a nice looking hitch and is virtually invisible. I had a 99 Avant that used the same Da'lan hitch as our allroads and now I have an allroad with the OEM hitch.

Works great with the Thule ball-mount bike rack - see previous posts.

Default I am not installing it.

Having opened the box for the factory hitch kit, I am definitely NOT installing this myself. It's not that I am unable to do so, but believe me this is one that is worth paying someone else to complete the job.

You have to remove tail lights, bumper shock mounts, the bumper and so on. What a pain. 2-3 hours is a very ambitious goal.

Default 3 hours at a snails pace and I could not make it any longer

It is not a tricky job at all. Let me know if you want any additional instructions or tips I took some notes when installing mine.
