For those who have heard the dreaded Dentist Drill...
So while away on a business trip I left my allroad at a local custom stereo installer to have the system upgraded.
When I picked up the car today I immediately noticed a "whine" as I drove away. The "whine" increases with increased rpm and all but disappears when the at idle and not moving. Of course my first thoughts were: uh turbo(s) going. But there didn't seem to be any loss of power or any visual indications (i.e. smoke). I drove to a friends house and had her rev the car while I listened in to the engine while standing in front of the car. Thankfully I didn't hear any "whine". However, having never heard what a blown turbo sounds like or a deteriorating turbo sounds like I am still not 100% convinced. Doesn't it stand to reason that a blown turbo would sound much worse while standing in front of the open engine bay than it would in the cabin of the car?
One last piece of info, when I start the car there a burst of this "whine" sound that drops when the rpm drops to idle.
My thinking now is that there is feedback through the new stereo system that is causing the whine. However if I turn the radio off, I still get the whine. If it were electrical, would this be the case?
I will be taking the car back to the installer tomorrow, but thought I would gather opinions here as well.
Thanks!!!

there is no mistaking it..its not a whine like you state...more like a steam whistle..
chances are..youhad electrical work done, so it may be the speakers picking up the alternator's generation field noise. Back to the stero shop.

when mine went, it was much louder than the "normal" whine - more comparable to a high pitched fire
truck siren, or maybe a dentist drill if it were being held right next to your ear. think LOUD.
pedestrians on the sidewalk turning their heads to see what that noise is type of loud.
